A Tribute to Don Forgey
by Doug Williams
Not
enough can be said for ‘A Friend’ but I’ll sure try.
Don has entertained guests and patrons of the Fireside Café and
Lounge at Whistlin’ Jack Lodge since 1976. He is a very accomplished
musician, entertainer and song writer. His popularity reaches far and
wide, to mean, nationally and internationally. That should not come as
a surprise since his personality is of genuine kindness and appreciation
for all those who surround him.
In the early days of his youth, Don grew up loving music and the mountains.
Then, as a young adult and high school student, he formed and lead musical
groups (most famous was Bazooka Joe). Ultimately, he would become an accomplished
song writer and recording artist, taking him to California and…Nashville.
Don’s unique and particular God given talent launched him to heights
few can relate to.
In 1976, after entertaining with Bazooka Joe throughout the Northwest,
British Columbia and Alberta, Canada, Don came home. Being energetic he
wrote a lot of musical lyrics and every song he composed was GOOD.
With ‘song book’ and his years of experience in hand, Don
and I met to consider whether Whistlin’ Jack Lodge would support
music, let alone Don Forgey’s music. That conversation re-established
our friendship and as well, a wonderful working relationship that remains
complete today.
Thank you Don Forgey!
A
Bit of Heaven – Right Here on Earth!
by Doug Williams
The present day Fireside Lounge is located in what was the dining room
(and fireplace) of the original lodge and made up the entire building.
During the summer, the Lodge offered a cozy dining room for families driving
from the Yakima Valley (and many other parts of the region). The Lodge
also served as a stopover for campers, vacationers, tourists, guests of
the lodge and the surrounding summer home owners.
Outdoorsmen (cougar hunters, snowshoers and wintertime campers) would
stop at the Lodge for a cup of java and conversation or to ask for help.
Logging and road building was an entire industry, so men working in the
woods or associated with those industries would stop in as well. Their
conversations with my dad were always a novelty and I enjoyed listening
in very much.
All in all, my home, Whistlin’ Jack Lodge, was…A Bit of
Heaven – Right Here on Earth!
